A tile shower is supposed to last decades, but the ones that fail rarely fail without warning. Long before water finds its way into your walls and floor, your shower drops hints — a smell, a stain, a tile that shifts under your hand. Catching those signs early is the difference between a straightforward re-tile and a much larger water-damage repair.
We're Konar Bros Tile Co., a family-run tile installer serving Tampa Bay, and we get called to a lot of failing showers — almost always after the homeowner ignored the early signs. Here are the seven we tell people to watch for, and why waiting on any of them usually makes the job bigger and more expensive.
1. Loose, Hollow, or Cracked Tiles
Tap around your shower walls and floor. Tiles that sound hollow instead of solid have lost their bond to the substrate, which often means moisture has gotten behind them or the original installation was poor. A tile that actually shifts or pops loose is a clear signal the system underneath has failed.
Cracked tiles are another red flag, especially if cracks appear in a line or keep coming back after replacement. That usually points to movement or a flexing substrate beneath — the tile is just the messenger. Tiling over a moving base only buys a few months before the cracks return.
One loose tile near a corner can sometimes be a localized fix, but multiple loose or hollow tiles mean the bond and likely the waterproofing have broken down across the shower. At that point a re-tile is the honest answer.
2. Cracked, Crumbling, or Missing Grout
Grout is your shower's first line of defense. When it cracks, crumbles, or falls out — especially in corners and along the floor-to-wall joint — water gets a direct path behind the tile. A little touch-up is normal maintenance; widespread failing grout is a structural warning.
Pay special attention to changing-plane joints (where the wall meets the floor or another wall). These should often be sealed with flexible caulk, not rigid grout, because they move. Rigid grout cracking out of these joints repeatedly is a sign the shower wasn't built right and water is likely already getting in.
If you're constantly re-grouting the same spots, you're treating a symptom. Persistent grout failure usually means the waterproofing membrane underneath is compromised, and no amount of new grout fixes that.
3. A Musty Smell That Won't Go Away
A persistent musty or mildew smell that survives cleaning is one of the most reliable signs of trouble. It means moisture is trapped somewhere it shouldn't be — behind the tile, in the substrate, or in the framing — feeding mold you can't see or reach.
Surface mildew on grout wipes away and stays gone with a good cleaning routine. A smell that keeps coming back no matter how much you scrub is coming from inside the wall, and you can't clean your way out of that. See how to clean and maintain tile showers in Florida to rule out surface causes first.
In Florida's humidity, hidden moisture turns into a mold problem fast. A musty shower isn't just unpleasant — it can affect indoor air quality and, left long enough, rot the framing.
4. Stains, Discoloration, and Water Where It Shouldn't Be
Watch for staining or discoloration that won't clean off, soft or spongy spots on the floor, and — the big one — water showing up outside the shower: a stain on the ceiling below, a warped baseboard, or peeling paint on an adjacent wall. Those mean water is escaping the shower envelope.
Discoloration that bleeds back through new grout or caulk is a sign of saturation behind the tile. Likewise, if the shower floor flexes or feels soft underfoot, the substrate may be water-damaged. These are not cosmetic issues — they're evidence the waterproofing has failed.
Water damage spreads silently and cheaply at first, then suddenly and expensively. The earlier you act, the smaller the repair, which is why we'd rather look at a suspicious stain now than rebuild a rotted wall later.
5–7: Age, Outdated Build, and Constant Repairs
5. The shower is simply old. Showers built with the old felt-and-mortar method, or any shower 20-plus years old, are living on borrowed time. If yours predates modern membrane waterproofing, a re-tile is a chance to bring it up to a system that lasts. Learn what that means in what is Schluter waterproofing.
6. You're constantly repairing it. If you're re-caulking, re-grouting, or replacing tiles every few months, you're spending real money chasing a problem that won't go away. Those repairs add up, and they never address the root cause behind the tile.
7. You're remodeling anyway. If the look is dated or you're updating the rest of the bathroom, re-tiling the shower at the same time is the efficient move — you avoid paying for demo and prep twice. Explore the options in tub-to-shower conversion vs full remodel.
What to Do If You Spot These Signs
If your shower is showing one or two of these signs, don't panic — but don't ignore them either. The cost gap between catching a problem early and rebuilding after water damage is enormous. A quick professional look tells you whether it's a small repair or time for a re-tile.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my shower needs re-tiling?
Watch for loose or hollow-sounding tiles, cracked or crumbling grout, a musty smell that won't clean away, stains or water showing up outside the shower, and constant repairs. Multiple signs usually mean the waterproofing has failed and a re-tile — not patching — is the fix.
Is a musty smell in my shower a serious problem?
Yes, if it survives cleaning. A persistent musty smell means moisture is trapped behind the tile or in the framing, feeding hidden mold. In Florida's humidity this spreads quickly and can rot framing, so it's worth a professional look rather than waiting.
Can I just replace a few loose tiles instead of re-tiling?
Sometimes a single loose tile is a localized fix. But multiple loose or hollow tiles, cracks that keep returning, and failing grout usually mean the bond and waterproofing have broken down across the shower — in which case a full re-tile is the honest, lasting solution.
How much does it cost to re-tile a shower in Tampa?
Most custom walk-in showers run $1,200–$4,500 installed depending on size, tile, and whether there's water damage to repair behind the old shower. We give a flat written quote after a free in-home visit. See our pricing page for full ranges.
